West Runton beach

West Runton Beach is situated between the towns of Sheringham and Cromer. At high tide the beach is mainly shingle, but as the tide goes out a large expanse of fine sand is revealed, along with numerous rockpools, great for exploring with the kids. Beyond the sandstone cliffs are the fields of the Norfolk countryside. The cliffs are famous for hosting large numbers of interesting fossils and in 1990 the most intact skeleton of a mammoth was found here, now known as the West Runton Mammoth. The cliffs at West Runton are a Site of Special Scientific Interest because of their geological importance. It is illegal to dig onto these cliffs or remove anything directly from them without permission. West Runton is also home to the largest chalk reef in Europe making it popular with divers.
