The motto of Bury is Shrine of a King, Cradle of the Law. The King of course refers to St. Edmund and Cradle of the Law refers to an incident which took place on the 20th November 1214 AD.  Cardinal Langton and the Barons swore at St. Edmunds altar that they would obtain from King John the ratification of the Magna Charta.
