In
the local church is an unusual inscription
regarding a Christopher Burraway who was guilty of incest with his
mother, though not intentionally. Alice had a baby by her father
called Christopher who left home as a young boy and then returned when
he was a man. Christopher met Alice again and neither of them recognised
the other. Christopher took her as his mistress and then married her.
Later Alice identified her son by a mole on his body and they realised
what they had done. The inscription goes along these lines: Here Lies
the body of Christopher Burraway, who departed this life 18 day of
October, 1730 aged 59 years And their Lies Alice, who by her life was my
sister, my mistress, my mother, and my wife. Died February 12, 1729 aged
76 years. |
