A visitors guide to the pretty Broadland village of Ludham
located right in the middle of the Norfolk Broads National Park.
Ludham is surrounded by fields and marshes and there are plenty of
opportunities for walking, boating and bird watching and exploring the
Norfolk Broads National Park. Womack Water - Ludhams own small broad and
staithe has moorings for boats and is a pleasant place to sit, only a
short walk from the main village. Just outside the village is Ludham
Bridge where boats can be hired.
Hunters Yard situated off Womack Water provides a
unique opportunity to sail on beautifully traditional mahogany cabin
yachts.
A walk out to the remains of St. Benets Abbey which
was founded in the 9th century follow the signs for Horning, then the
signs for St. Benet's Abbey off Hall Common Road.
There are two village pubs, small but good range of
shops for all your basic provisions.
The coast is six miles away and the larger Broadland
towns of Wroxham and Hoveton
seven miles. Norwich and Great
Yarmouth are both about half and hours drive away.
At How Hill there are stretches of
sedge and reed, marsh meadows, dykes, a woodland and open water. Here
there is a small information centre and museum detailing life as a
marshman in the early 20th century. The sedges and reeds of the Broads
are still used for traditional thatching. An Edwardian style electric
boat runs trips through the dykes and marshes at certain times of the
year.
