Hickling Broad is the largest of the Norfolk Broads covering over 370 acres of open water. A wonderful place to enjoy the rich abundance of wildlife. Where visitors can explore nature trails on foot or take a two hour trip on a traditional reedlighter led by one of Hickling Broads wardens. Spot a swallowtail butterfly, the largest butterfly in Britan, or the Norfolk hawker dragonfly with its brown body and vivid green eyes or the even rarer bittern bird.

The village of Hickling is surrounded by beautiful countryside with quiet lanes which can be enjoyed by both the walker and the cyclist. Cycle hire is available at the Hickling Pleasure Boat Stores. The area around here has a wealth of nature reserves and is a popular destination for Ornithologists.

There are two village inns one of which is located down by the waters edge. A regatta normally takes place at Hickling during the holiday summer months, with race events for many different classes of boats, plus bank side events, live music, barbecues with the emphasis on family fun. The old church at Hickling has within it a carved coffin that dates from Saxon times. Hickling Broad has its own ghostly visitor - visit our Myths and Legend pages to find out more.

Quiet golden sandy beaches can be found at Waxham just 1.9 miles or 3km away. At Sutton The Broads Museum and Sutton Windmill attraction has seven museums on site each with its own different theme. Much of the museum is on easily accessible level - Open daily from 10.00am to 17.30pm - 1st April to 30th September.
