The name Caister comes from the Latin word 'castra' which means fortress.

The few Roman remains of this castle or fort can be visited, they include a wall and ditch sections and building foundations managed by Great Yarmouth Borough Council.

Caister was founded in the 2nd century AD and was one of the chief towns inhabited by the Iceni.
Nowadays its inhabitants include holiday makers and Norfolk folk.

Caister-on-sea boasts wide sandy beaches backed by grassy dunes and offers the visitor a quieter seaside holiday yet Caister is within easy reach of the busier seaside resort of Great Yarmouth.

To the west of the town is the more substantial Caister Castle built around 1432 by the legendary Sir John Falstolf who features in a Shakespeare plays, here you will also find a motor museum.
