When the Civil War began in 1642 Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658) was sent to organise the defences of Norfolk. According to legend some Cromwellian soldiers were billeted in the church of St. Mary at South Creake. These same soldiers then used the beautiful carved angels in the roof of the church as target practice. When the angel carvings were restored in 1958, lead shot was indeed found embedded in the angels wood carved bodies. Oliver Cromwell died in 1658, however, when the monarchy was restored under Charles II in 1660, Cromwell's body was dug up and symbolically executed. Nota Bene: Oliver Cromwell's family changed their name from Williams to Cromwell.
