Before leaving the grounds of the church of St. Nicholas in East
Dereham, seek out an unusual shaped gravestone which is in the
churchyard in front of the church door.
Its the grave of Jean de Narde of France who died 6th
October 1799.

During the Napoleonic wars the detached Bell Tower of St. Nicholas was
turned into a prison.
Jean de Narde was captured and then imprisoned in
this jail.
However, he managed to escape but unfortunately was
shot and killed by one of the soldiers who had been employed to guard
the prisoners.
So it was that he was buried in the grounds of his prison, the place
where he had been interred and probably the place where he had been
shot, he was just 28.
