This
is the church in which Horatio
Nelson's father was rector until his death in 1802. The church
dates from the 13th century and was restored in Nelson's
honour in the 19th century.
A cross in the chancel
arch and a lectern are both made from timbers taken from HMS Victory,
Nelson's flagship, given to All Saints by the Board of Admiralty. Inside
the church lies Nelson’s father under a plain slab simply inscribed
‘The grave of the Reverend Edmund Nelson Rector of this Parish’.
Close by is a fine 15th century brass in the chancel
floor to Sir William Calthorpe 1420.
Dressed
in full armour, he was the lord of the manor and patron of the church.
Nelson had wanted to be buried here but King George the 3rd
decreed otherwise and he was buried in the crypt of St. Pauls in 1805.
However, the graves of his much loved sister Susannah and her husband
and also Nelsons brother Maurice, can be found outside on the
north side of the church. Also of interest, on the south east buttress,
are two mass dials.
On the church door is a notice "All who enter of your charity pray
latch these doors lest a bird enter and die of thirst" |
