Lots to See - Lots to Do

This timeless village retains much of its old-world charm and atmosphere with much of the present village lying within the Castle Walls. The village takes its name from a Norman Castle built in the eleventh century and of which the Bailey Gate is a surviving feature.

West of the village are the extensive ruins of Castle Acre Priory with its monastic buildings and priors lodging founded in the 11th century. Open to the public and in the care of English Heritage.

At the other end of the village is the site of the old Castle, 'perhaps the finest castle earthworks in England' according to Pevsner, now carefully preserved with open access, it is a lovely place for an afternoon stroll. Here you will find magnificent wide ranging views from the top of the earthworks across the marshy valley of the River Nar.

The Peddars Way links up with the Nar Valley Way walk, a 34 mile long walk, running from the historic port of King's Lynn to the Museum of Rural life at Gressenhall. The River Nar is crossed by the Peddars Way just below the Castle.

There are two good watering holes and other places for refreshment within the village as well as a village shop which will supply all your basic holiday provisions.  The market town of Swaffham with its weekly market and large supermarket on its outskirts, is only a few miles down the road.
